Bringing It Back Compilation

I went to see Outspoken the first time in a pizza shop in Norco, California. I met Popeye from Farside and found him to be very quiet and soft-spoken. I also met Jae from Outspoken and found out that he lived one city over from me, in La Habra. We went on to be friends for a couple of years, until I left for the Marines in 1995. I haven't spoken to him since.

The show at the pizza place was incredible. Unbroken, Outspoken, Farside, Mean Season, and Process for only 5 bucks. Unreal.

I bought a shirt for Unbroken and Outspoken. I wore them both all the time. The Unbroken shirt disappeared, probably to a friend's collection. The Outspoken longsleeve was stolen by my sister and ruined with paint. What a horrible ending to that story, huh?

I went to the Coming of Age Fest three years ago and ran into John Coyle, the vocalist for Outspoken. I had fun talking to him about life and being a hardcore father. When they played, I went off like I hadn't since I was 19.

This compilation was released by Ammunition Records and has been unavailable for some time. I hope some people enjoy. It has Blackspot, Outspoken, Ignite, and Remain on it.

Atmosphere

Okay, so I don't listen to much in the way of hip-hop. I'm a white boy who never really found too much about that music that I could relate to. However, I have liked some from time to time, if it's stuff that spoke to me. So, last week a student played the group Atmosphere for me and I was blown away. I have been listening to them, Brother Ali, and Sage Francis all week because of this one listen. Anyway, below are a couple their albums. I hope people enjoy them. Later.

Co-Ed

Okay, so this is a band from Southern California that I was introduced to by my cousin, Dennis. See, Dennis played soccer with this guy named Mac, who was the guitarist for this band called Backside. They used to play local shows and may have done one or two tours. I last saw them play at the Showcase Theater with The Vandals, 7 Seconds, and Unwritten Law. This was just before I left for the Marines. I come back and Dennis tells me that Mac has left Backside and formed a new band with his girlfriend, whose name escapes me at the moment. So, I check out Co-Ed and I like what I hear. I don't have the last track on the album, which is a recording of the singer from Backside threatening Mac if he puts the second to last song on the album. This song chastises the guys from the band for not staying true to the political convictions that they claimed just a short time ago. I wish I had that track, as it was friggin' hilarious. Anyway, enjoy the album and let me know what you think. I'm sorry there is no cover art. I searched, but couldn't find anything.

North Side Kings

I wanted to share some albums from Arizona's own North Side Kings. These guys have the sound and the attitude of any number of NYHC bands, but hail from the desert of Arizona. Here's what I love about this band, though. The singer punched Glenn Danzig in the grill after Danzig pushed him. I loved it. To all those "he sucker punched him" people out there, it's a fight. There are no rules unless a ref is in the middle. I've known guys over the years that would throw a punch as soon as the other guy pushed him once. That's how they survived the lives they led. Danzig shouldn't have laid hands on the guy, end of story. Anyway, below are the three albums I have. Enjoy.

Against the Wall- Identify Me 7"

Okay, so here is the only official recorded output from this band. I was introduced to them through a guy I used to work with at Sav-On Drugstore back in the '90's. He told me that he was the original bass player and had done all the actual recording, but been given no credit. Whatever. Anyone I've talked to who knows these guys say that the bass player on the record is the only one. Anyway, check them out. Pretty cool stuff.

My New Blog

Hey to anyone and everyone who checks this out. I have been running a blog for a few months now called Teaching Defiance and was uploading podcasts that I make at home of music. However, I just haven't had the time to keep up with this, so I decided to try my hand at sharing cool punk/hardcore music with people. I'll be upping different bands that I think people will like and, hopefully, get some good feedback from people about the stuff I share. If anyone from any of the bands comes by here and wants their stuff taken down, let me know. I'll remove it at once. I'm not here to piss in anyone's Cheerios. I just want to share cool music. Later.
